“The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls”.
-Pablo Picasso
My name is Jess, and I make tattoos! Read on to learn a little about who I am and what I do:
While I originally hail from various small towns in New Hampshire, I’ve been living and working in Cincinnati since the fall of 2012. Before then, I lived in Charlotte, NC where I worked for a lovely company, for a lovely 8 hours a day, punched out, went home, and rarely had time to do anything creative. After deciding to stay home when our daughter was born, I began looking into future career plans - tattooing being a strong interest. I knew it would be hard work, and finding someone to teach me was going to be difficult, but fate brought me to Jim Miller at Krazy Kats Tattoo. Tough on the outside, but gooey on the inside - he showed me what it would take to be successful in this business, and just how clearly passionate and humble one needs to be to break away from the pack and carve out a name for themselves, all while honoring the craft and it’s elaborate histories. He taught me that no one can ever know all there is to know about this business - but the best ones never stop trying. He was gracious enough to teach me for a year, and then we made the decision to move back to my husband’s hometown of Cincinnati to be closer to family and build a life here.
My favorite style is a type of illustrative look - like what you’d find plastered all over the walls of Grandma’s kitchen. Botanical prints, flowered wallpaper, you name it. Faded colors, timeless lines, classic, warm and cozy. I enjoy tattooing florals, botanicals, birds, critters, and just about anything inspired by nature’s perfection, and I also enjoy creating pieces that look like a page from an old storybook. While I do enjoy black and gray work, color makes me happiest - soft and worn palettes that go with anything and just look comfy! Grandma can’t be mad about your new tattoo if she had the same thing on her throw pillows, right?
You should also know that when I’m working, I generally talk too much. I also talk to the tattoos I’m working on, make weird sounds, and complain that there’s never enough coffee in the world. Gratuities are never expected, but always appreciated. I also love and accept houseplants and coffee, so if you see either wandering around on your way to your appointment, I will gladly adopt it and give it a good home.
I am located at Skincraft Tattoo and Piercing in the Northside neighborhood in Cincinnati. I’ve been here from the very beginning, and will remain here as long as they’ll have me. It’s a great group of people who are fabulous at what they do, are supportive of and helpful to one another, and treat each other like family.
